Tips:

  • Inform family and friends of your upcoming surgery to arrange help during your recovery.
  • Plan and freeze meals in advance for your recovery time.
  • Have ice bags on hand (a large bag of frozen vegetables in a towel works well) and pillows for elevating your arm and leg.
  • Fill your post-op prescriptions before your surgery date. Make sure you do not start taking them until after your surgery.
  • Arrange for a ride to and from the hospital.
  • Pack loose fitting clothes for the trip home. Patients having shoulder surgery may not be able to lift their arms to pull a top on, wear button down shirts. Patients having knee surgery may have a brace or be immobilized and have trouble with long pants may want to wear shorts or a skirt.
  • DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING AFTER MIDNIGHT THE NIGHT BEFORE SURGERY.
  • You may brush your teeth, but do not swallow any water. Your stomach must be completely empty.
  • Stop taking herbal supplements, aspirin, Advil, Motrin, Aleve, Daypro, Naprosyn and any other aspirin like drugs 7-10 days prior to surgery.
  • Remove all jewelry and nail polish.
  • If you wear contact lenses, please remove them on the day of surgery and wear your glasses.
  • Patients having shoulder surgery may not be able to sleep lying flat. A recliner or enough pillows to sleep in a semi-sitting position would be helpful.
  • Your physician may suggest physical therapy as part of your recovery plan, click on our Physical Therapy Listing to get a complete list of offices we work with.
